About Us:
Welcome to ShinsengumiHQ.com or (SHQ) for short. It is possible that there are people with accounts in other communities who refer to "SHQ", even have similar usernames, or say "I heard this from SHQ". We are the SHQ which built a website (server record 3.2004) following the resurgence of interest over on a Yahoo mailing list in 2004 (the old list was closed and a new one was started http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHQ/). There are many Shinsengumi sites and some may assume that any information they get is from SHQ. Remember, there are many communities online and all over the world therefore we make no claim on holding a monopoly on information regarding the group, however we are confident that some of the data on this site has never appeared in English before, or has never been properly cited online.
If you do find information here helpful and choose to repeat it in another community please link to our site to prevent future misunderstanding and be sure to study the sources we used (our pages come with a source list on the bottom).
Failure to cite sources constitutes plagiarism and will only serve to perpetuate more misinformation or exaggeration. Plagiarism is a serious offense which includes the stealing of ideas from another researcher and slightly changing the wording. Even if you do not directly quote an author you MUST say your are summarizing or paraphrasing his/her work.
Please remember that the Shinsengumi were and still are a very controversial historical group. We will address their legacy using various approaches. Thus, our site is a fansite with pop culture, media, fanart, fanfic, fan "work" such as cosplay and historical facts researched using sources written in English, Japanese websites and our Japanese friends.
We currently do not provide copyrighted material such as manga for download, nor material not yet copyrighted in the United States or translated into English. Please try to support your favorite writers and artists by buying their work.
History
Contains all the info you wanted to know on the Shinsengumi and also Aizu-han their patron domain.
Fiction
Art Fanfiction Cosplay. We celebrate the many "universes" in which the Shinsengumi appear.
Makoto
This entire site was built by many people working as a team over the course of a few years. So it is powered by makoto. Unique expressions of "fanwork" not connected to a universe can be found here. This category also serves as a "catch all" for things which is hard to place under a label.
Wikipedia.org
Anyone at any time may change information at Wikipedia, shinsengumihq.com is not responsible for possible inaccurate information which may be added anonymously over time regarding the Shinsengumi. We have a public website here. We are only in control of material posted on our own site.
Wikipedia encourages the use of standard citation styles however the rule is a suggestion and not enforced. Some members have authored articles concerning Aizu or Aizu related figures. However, once posted, those articles are no longer ours. As for the Shinsengumi articles, if we link to those texts, we do so to direct visitors to other sources and encourage them to explore what is "out there" and we do not necessarily endorse nor "double check" the information on wikipedia. We are one of several dozen Shinsengumi sites. Similarly, our members are a handful of thousands around the world who may edit Wikipedia articles without our knowledge.
Note:
You may report errors using this email. However, when reporting errors if possible please present your sources (such as book or page number). We have no problem with putting conflicting information side by side on this website. In fact, by putting conflicting details next to one another, readers will realize how difficult it is to pursue an accurate narrative. Our volunteers place a very high priority in using the best textual resources so as to create a researchable paper trail and as a way of pointing out the bias or revisionism which has plagued basic inquiry into the Shinsengumi story.
We understand that there are many folktales connected to the Shinsengumi which cannot be verified. Please let us know if your information constitutes a story which falls into the realm of "verbal transmission". We appreciate folktales as well and will label them as such on our webpage. It would be very fascinating to end up proving to be factual in the long run. At the very least folktales and legends are to be appreciated on their own.
